Sony announced a new online platform today. This platform uses artificial intelligence to help people understand the value of antiques and old art. The service is called “Sony Heritage AI Appraisal.” It is available now in Japan. Sony plans to offer it in other countries later this year.

People can use the service through a website. They upload pictures of their items. The AI system examines the photos. It looks at many details. It checks the item’s style, materials, and condition. The AI then gives an estimated value range. It also provides information about the item’s history and authenticity.

Sony developed this AI using a huge collection of data. The AI studied millions of verified antique items. Experts trained the system. These specialists included historians and professional appraisers. Sony says the AI can spot fakes well. It finds small details humans might miss. This should reduce mistakes and fraud.

“People often have treasures they don’t understand,” said Kenji Tanaka, head of the project. “Our goal is simple. We want to make expert knowledge easy for everyone. This tool helps owners learn about their items quickly. It gives them a fair starting point before selling or insuring.”

The platform offers basic appraisals for free. Users get a quick value estimate and basic details. More detailed reports cost a fee. These reports include deeper historical analysis. They also give stronger authenticity checks. Sony insists the AI helps human experts. It does not replace them. The company sees it as a first step. Owners can use the report to consult specialists confidently.

Sony believes this makes the antique market more open. It helps beginners and experienced collectors. The AI handles common items fast. This frees up human appraisers for complex or very valuable pieces. The service currently focuses on Japanese and European ceramics, paintings, and furniture. Sony will add more categories soon.
